Forestry Products
Alabama’s forestry products industry is expanding. Alabama has the second largest timberland base in the U.S., and companies like Georgia Pacific and Weyerhaeuser continue to make investments in the state. There’s nearly 23 million acres of timberland, and Alabama’s forests are so fertile that the growth of softwood and hardwoods consistently outpaces their removal rates.
The state is home to over 110 manufacturing facilities including sawmills, paper mills, and other production sites. With $1.5 billion of Alabama forest products exported in 2021, there’s plenty of opportunity to be found in the industry. In recent years, Alabama’s forest products industry has consistently attracted significant new capital investment, including over $600 million in 2021, generating 720 new jobs.

Covington County is no stranger to the forestry products industry. The area has several historic mills that accessed its forests of towering pine, oak, hickory, elm, beech, and poplar.
Forest management continues to play an important role in the overall health of Conecuh National Forest in Andalusia. Sound timber management practices help establish and maintain healthy and productive forests and ecosystems that are more resistant to insect attacks, diseases, ravages of fire, and climatological events. The Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center in Andalusia also practices pine and longleaf restoration and management.
Modern day companies looking to expand can take advantage of available shovel-ready industrial sites with proximity to five major highways, multiple airports, railways, and port facilities. Covington County is business-friendly with fast permitting, customized incentive packages, and comprehensive workforce training.
